This term we are working on sustainability. To help us learn more about sustainability, we cut up an apple to see how much earth is left to grow food for the future.
3/4 of the earth is covered in water, that means that only 1/4 of earth is left to grow things. We found out that there is only 1/32 of the earth that is used to feed the earth's population. 3/32 of the earth is either: Too rocky, too sandy, too hot or soil that isn't able to produce any plants. By Brookelyn, Marilyn and Cameron

Olympic model
As part of our unit tasks, Melissa and I made an Olympic Model out of recyclable materials. We used driftwood, dried grass and smoothed glass from a beach, and recycled cardboard for the clothes. We made a person holding the Olympic torch going up a runway, with a rock at the end to stand the torch on.

Isaac's Olympics cake
Rachael's Chocolate Cake
In room 8 we have been learning about sustainability. One of our homework tasks was to bake a cake representing either the Olympics or sustainability. I chose sustainability.
I thought that a chocolate cake would be a nice flavour to do, since nearly EVERYONE likes chocolate, and I also love chocolate myself. Firstly I cut out an ice cream lid to make the earth and then made green icing as the land. Then I wrote a message on the cake: 'How long can it last?' Lastly I hopped onto the computer and found a recycling sign to stick onto the cake.
I had a lot of fun making the cake and I hope everyone enjoys it! :)

Melissa's interview with Marilyn about Open Night.
On the 9th of August Tawa intermediate had its Open night, to show students-to-be what a great school it is! Marilyn was a Unity Pasefika performer on the night, and she is going to tell us how she thought it went.
“Umm...it went really well, and I thought that the Unity Pasefika was awesome!”
Did many people turn up and do you think they enjoyed it?
“Yeah, a lot of people turned up and they applauded really loudly to all the groups that went on stage”
What do you think was the best performance?
“Unity Pasefika! Duh!! ‘Cause we were awesome!”
Were there any muck ups in open night?
“We were perfect!! The whole of Open Night ran smoothly!”
What was your favourite part?
“Um..when the band was performing, Summer and Eden were awesome at singing and the guitarists and pianists were really good at playing their instruments!”
Do you think we should change anything next year?
“Um.. To try and do something that they didn’t do on Matariki night.”
Ok, thanks Marilyn, it sounds like so much fun!

Renee's kiwi cake
Renee's kiwi cake.
Last Monday I made a kiwi cake. It took me a few hours to do. On Saturday I made the two chocolate cakes and then on Sunday I decorated the cake with fondant, icing and flake bars. I used yellow fondant for the beak and the feet. And black, white and brown for the eyes and brown to cover the little cake on top. Then I sprinkled the whole cake with chopped up flake bars to look like the fur.
Everyone enjoyed it and wanted more! Overall the cake making and the bringing it to school was really fun.

My Beehive cake
For homework I made a cake representing citizenship I made the beehive! The bowl I made it in was a skirt cake it was a dolls skirt and I turned it upside down. I then used a skewer to make the windows of the Beehive. When I brought it to school it almost toppled off the plate as I walked up the stairs to the class!I think everybody enjoyed it because they all had seconds delicious(it was a chocolate mud cake!).

STORY TELLER
On the 27th of March, a librarian from Porirua Library was invited to our school to talk about the NZ Book Month.
She recommended a few of her favourite stories that changed her life. There were tickets for some people to be able to see and hear about thoughts and recommendations in the library. There were different type of stories, from picture books about someone's life, war, to sad and funny chapter books. Some of the books had even turned into movies! She told us about the children's book awards. She was very humorous and she had a lot of expression too.
Overall, we think that everyone that had an experience really enjoyed it and hoped to go again!

The Beach Trip
Last week we went to Ngatitoa Beach. We played a lot of games like Rippa,
Cricket, Tag and alot more. Only a few people went for a swim in the
beach including ME and Brett. We found a log and rode it lIke boat. Also Ben D and I went Crab Hunting. We found THOUSANDS of crabs but also we
found a really huge Mudskipper Fish. We caught one but it was
pretty hard because it was really slippery.

An awesome syndicate trip!
FINALLY! A couple of days ago was the day for the Syndicate trip. I had been waiting for AGES!
We went to Linden Station and rode the train to Mana. There was a beach
there and that was where I spent the most time at. I found this stone
thingy and Mrs Hannah said it was a piece of glass thaat had been in the
salty sea water and turned smooth.
Then some people (not to be named) hunted crabs from their homes under rocks and put them in a concrete block which they call an ''AQUARIUM".
Some people and I tried to put them back. Then 1 of the big crabs in the "AQUARIUM"died. Brigette and I had a funeral for it and just as we finished, we found another dead one.We had a funeral for that one too.The first one was called CrabbyMac'crab'crab,The secound,CrabbyMac'crab'crab Junior. We found 2 more one that was GIGANTIC! we named it JUMBO.The other was called,Lumbo and someone's crab died. I think it was a new born one. We named it Tiny.It was a fun and sad day (for the crabs) .
After all that It was time to go home and that was really upsetting because I wanted to stay. It was a really exciting day and I hope our next syndicate trip will be right there again.

Wild weather picnic
Wild Weather Picnic!!
On a
freezing Thursday morning, Tui syndicate travelled to Ngati Toa Domain to have
an awesome picnic. When we first got there, Cameron and I sprinted as fast as
we could to the see-saws. After a while we started to get bored so we joined in
with Brookelyn and walked to the beach together.
While
we were on the beach, we decided to walk through the rugged rocks to see what
the other people were looking at. When we got there, we saw everyone flipping
over rocks to see if there were any crabs under them so we tried doing that. 5
minutes later we saw Mr Goosen walking along with his fishing rod. He started
fishing but sadly no success, but minutes later, Phoenix grabs a fish with no
problem at all.

Room 8 made volcanoes for a science project. We made the volcanoes in the T.I.S Studio. To make the volcanoes we used baking soda, vinegar, plastic bottles, plastic spoons and bowls, red food colouring and dish washing liquid. We put tarpaulin in the centre of the room and covered with newspaper, then in groups of three or four we created the volcanoes.
We had a lot of fun and watching them erupt was really cool!
Room 8 2012, week 4
We have started the year with a hiss and a roar and are getting to know each other really well.
Each week we complete a technology challenge where we work in teams to create something. One week we had to use newspaper to build a bridge capable of holding a dictionary, another week we had to build a newspaper raft which could float on water with a load of plastic bricks.
Here is one of our bridges.
