Science Experiment – Hanging Crystals
Scientific method
Purpose: To find out what happens when baking soda is dissolved in hot water and combined with string over a period of time.
Hypothesis: (Prediction of what you think will happen)
The baking soda will cling to the string and create crystals over a period of time.
Experiment:
1. Resources/materials – 2 same sized jars or glasses, piece of string or wool about 50 cm long, 12 teaspoons of baking soda (6 for each glass), 2 paper clips, 1 plate, same amount of hot water in each glass, 1 teaspoon, flat surface in the sun.
2. Method-
• Connect paper clips to each end of the string or wool.
• Pour equal amounts of hot water into 2 glasses or jars ¾ full.
• Put 6 teaspoons of baking soda into the first glass.
• Stir the baking soda until it dissolves.
• Put the ends of the string with the paper clips into the glasses so that the paper clip touches the bottom of the glass.
• After a minute put 6 teaspoons of Baking soda into the other glass and mix it until it dissolves.
• Wait for a week and observe.

Toka tu Moana
In the afternoon we all went to see Toha tu moana. they are a Maori cultural theatre group who did dance, drama and haka. They based it on a story about maui but used modern music.
There were lots of challenges.
The first challenge was the poi, they had to get two girls to do the challenge on stage.
One girl was good at it and the other girl was better but they both had a go.
The second challenge was the taiaha. They had to get two boys, they were both good at it and everybody laughed with them.
The third challenge was the finger thing. There were two people that did it one person won, that was Tohu and the other one was Selena they did their best but Tohu won at the end of the challenge.

Current Events
This week we have been talking about current events.
This is some that we have been talking about.
World News- BP oil spill costs pass $6bn mark
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion has so far cost BP a total of $6.1bn (£3.8bn), the company has said.
National- Nature dumps on Whakatane
Two days of torrential rain around Whakatane in Bay of Plenty have caused floods that blocked roads, cut phone lines and forced families from their homes.
At least 15 people were staying with friends or at the town's war memorial hall last night after rising waters punched a 10 metre hole in the Te Rahu canal stop-bank, flooding 10 hectares of farm land.
Local- Water-polo in Wellington as honours shared
IT RAINED goals at Westpac Stadium on Friday night as the Wellington Phoenix opened their Hyundai A-League 2010/11 campaign with a 3-3 draw against Gold Coast United in wet and difficult playing conditions.
Played in front of an 8398-strong crowd, the weather could not dampen the spirits of the home side for much of the match, but the visitors did with an 87th-minute equaliser after the Phoenix had held a 3-1 lead 10 minutes into the second half.
