Georgia's Hanging Crystals experiment
Science Experiment – Hanging Crystals
Scientific method
Purpose: To find out what happens when baking soda is dissolved in hot water and combined with string over a period of time.
Hypothesis: (Prediction of what you think will happen)
The baking soda will cling to the string and create crystals over a period of time.
Experiment:
1. Resources/materials – 2 same sized jars or glasses, piece of string or wool about 50 cm long, 12 teaspoons of baking soda (6 for each glass), 2 paper clips, 1 plate, same amount of hot water in each glass, 1 teaspoon, flat surface in the sun.
2. Method-
• Connect paper clips to each end of the string or wool.
• Pour equal amounts of hot water into 2 glasses or jars ¾ full.
• Put 6 teaspoons of baking soda into the first glass.
• Stir the baking soda until it dissolves.
• Put the ends of the string with the paper clips into the glasses so that the paper clip touches the bottom of the glass.
• After a minute put 6 teaspoons of Baking soda into the other glass and mix it until it dissolves.
• Wait for a week and observe.
